Juditha triumphans is Vivaldi’s only surviving oratorio and represents the peak of his vocal writing. The arias are full of blazing coloratura and beautifully drawn melodic lines that give the singers room for both virtuosity and expression. Vivaldi’s scoring is unusually rich and inventive: the orchestra includes mandolin, viola d’amore and a consort of viole da gamba, which together create a distinctive, colourful soundworld.

The music carries both heroic force and tenderness. Dramatic turns, meditative passages and brilliant climaxes alternate under a tight tension that holds the listener from first note to last. The soloists Julia Lezhneva, Marianne Beate Kielland, Sonja Runje, Erika Baikoff and Arnaud Gluck bring life and human depth to the story, while the vivid sound of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra carries the whole with bright energy.

The concert is a rare chance to hear Vivaldi at his finest: Baroque drama, virtuosity and the composer’s boundless imagination come together in one glittering evening. Juditha triumphans is living, breathing music that charms, moves and stays with you long afterwards.
