”The moral law in us, and the starry sky above us”

PianoEspoo festival and Helsinki Baroque Orchestra reconstruct what was one of the grandest concerts in the history of Western music.  On December 22, 1808, Ludwig van Beethoven presented an Akademie in Theater an der Wien, a grand orchestral concert premiering several of his works.  The program included the 5thand 6thSymphonies, the 4thPiano Concerto, the concert aria Ah! Perfido, the Choral Fantasy, and two movements of the Mass in C Major.

Though lasting over four hours in the reportedly ”freezing” theater, it was nonetheless an awe-inspiring demonstration of the composer’s genius and it marked the moment when Beethoven was near to achieving the epic fame that has propelled his musical reputation ever since.

The PianoEspoo Festival and the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra present the entire program of Akademie – 1808 for the first time in Finland. The Tapiola Chamber Choir and an impressive list of soloists join in the performance. The lineup of pianists includes Paavali Jumppanen, celebrated Beethoven specialist; Tarmo Peltokoski, fearless young keyboard improviser; and Ashley Wass, renowned British fortepianist. The latter’s rendition of the most famous arrangement in the piano repertoire, Franz Liszt’s version for solo piano of Beethoven’s  5thSymphony, will resound through the Helsinki Music Centre. Finnish soprano Helena Juntunen performs the concert aria and the vocal solos of the Choral Fantasy and the Mass in C Major will be performed by singers from the Sibelius Academy. Jan Tomasz Adamus, the highly regarded Polish period-music maestro, leads the concert.

Beethoven’s music – its inspiring flare, its consoling tone – is a true testimonial to the creative powers of a single human being. The composer gave voice to an entire era, the New Europe born of the French Revolution, and also the search for a personal inner harmony. One of Beethoven’s  conversation books contains the quote:  ”The moral law in us, and the starry sky above us – Kant!!!”,  thus summarizing the creative dualism of his art.
