Aapo Häkkinen to step down as Artistic Director of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra at the end of 2026

The orchestra, which turns 30 next year, prepares for a new chapter

Aapo Häkkinen, Artistic Director of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, will step down at the end of this year. Häkkinen has led the orchestra since 2003, and under his direction HeBo has become one of Europe’s most highly regarded period-instrument ensembles.

Many years of close collaboration between Häkkinen and the orchestra’s musicians have shaped HeBo’s distinctive and internationally recognised sound. During Häkkinen’s tenure, HeBo has brought numerous forgotten works back to life and, through its regular concert series, established a firm place in its home venue, Helsinki Music Centre.

Häkkinen will continue to work with the orchestra next year, when HeBo celebrates its 30th anniversary. He has planned the anniversary season and will conduct the orchestra in several spring concerts, in Helsinki as well as in the Netherlands and Spain, among other places. All concerts and tours already agreed will go ahead as planned.

The board of the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra association respects Häkkinen’s decision and expresses its deep gratitude for his pioneering work for the orchestra. The board is preparing a new model for the orchestra’s artistic leadership, with the musicians closely involved. HeBo’s work in early music continues in Helsinki and on international stages.
